There are a few elements of the process that I would consider ‘challenging’ but the foremost for me, is that I tend to almost always feel as though I never have enough time available to write. It becomes a struggle when those who don’t understand what it takes to develop a first draft are trying to compete for my attentions. Once I start writing I live and breathe the process becoming selfish with my time. It becomes important for me to be anti-social, reclusive. This can be hard for people to accept.
The other element that I would call out as a struggle is finding the best marketing strategy to establish a solid readership for my work. The evolution of self-publishing has blossomed. There are so many fantastic literary pieces being made available that it gets tricky to find a way to strike the interest of people enough to decide to take a chance on my work above others. It’s been a huge learning curve and moving feast given that I like to write fiction that crosses multiple genre’s.
Can you give us a short synopsis of Wantin?
Wantin is a book about discovery. Often when I see love depicted it focusses on an exchange between a couple. In the trilogy I wanted to capture a story that subtly explored a person’s love for themselves as well as for their friends, family, strangers and lovers. The first book in the series, Wantin, sets the scene with Talia (aged of six) establishing her first friendship with a boy called Bodhi. Her life takes a series of twists and turns that intentionally emphasize the unpredictability of life. Nothing is ever as it seems. During Talia’s coming of age the readers get to be a part of her sexual awakening. She doesn’t have all the answers and is certainly not perfect but she is genuine, adventurous and wants to be a participant in life.
What inspired you to write this book?
In 2012, I struggled to name five books that I had read where the heroine was female. The Hunger games lead character Katniss Everdeen is certainly a great example of a reluctant heroine that has been written beautifully and embraced by readers globally. I liked the idea of creating a romantic story around a character that women would like to strive to be and men would want to date. In saying this I held a strong desire to have the depiction of the tale as relatable for readers as possible. It was nice to offer a strong female heroin to readers in the absence of stereotypical over sexualized depictions. Talia is you, me … she isn’t perfect but she owns it.
How many hours per day do you spend writing?
I’m not keen on routine. My life cannot be scheduled. When I decide I want to start my next novel I write every chance I get and pretty much don’t stop the process until I am complete. I may go for days without picking up a pen because my imagination is telling me the story. During the times I listen, observe, feel the essence of what is being created. At a certain point the thoughts slow down and I begin capturing the tale told. It comes in ebbs and flows. I have been known to write 40 pages in a 16 hr frenzy and other times written 5 pages in 8 hrs.
I don’t force anything, instead I embrace everything. I allow myself to be the guide on each creative endeavor and don’t fight how I feel.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on two items at the moment. I find working on multiple projects helps stimulate my creative outlook. When I need a break or am feeling a little unenthused about something I am developing, I go for a long walk and when I return I switch to another project for a while.
· First draft development of Quantum - Book 3 in the Soliloquy’s Labyrinth series
