What’s the hardest part about being an author?
I would have to say the hardest part is trying to break out into the publishing world. Times have certainly changed, and so many authors (including me) self-publish, do their own marketing and promotions, everything! It can definitely be a blessing and a curse. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share my work, but it can certainly be a challenge getting your name to stand out against all the others. For me, the key is to never stop trying!
Can you give us a short synopsis of Tame The Beast?
Tame the Beast is set at the fictional college of Beaumont University where Clara Wright has just been accepted. Desperate to get out of her small town and experience a little adventure, but limited by family debt, Clara is less than thrilled about attending the private university in the town over. Everything changes when she meets Adam Beaumont, a junior with a reputation as shameless flirt. He is also the spoiled heir of the family who founded the university, but the perks of being big man on campus are quickly stripped away when his mother, the current dean, becomes disappointed in the man Adam has become. Determined to appease his mother and still enjoy his youth, Adam convinces Clara to tutor him. But even the best ideas never goes as planned, and as an attraction grows, so must Clara and Adam.
What inspired you to write this book?
I love the New Adult genre. It really is an exciting time in life where many are just beginning to experience the freedom of adulthood. But it also comes with a lot of new responsibilities and whole slew of obstacles, which is always so much fun to write about. Mixed with my life long love of fairy tales … and Tame the Beast was born! It’s actually inspired by many different versions of Beauty and the Beast, although, I wouldn’t call it a retelling. You won’t find any enchanted roses or evil sorceresses in this story. It’s certainly a tale all its own with many elements and themes I hope fans of the classic tale will recognize. I think that’s what I love so much about fairytales. Every culture has their own versions, and yet anyone can relate to them. My hope is that many readers are able to relate to the characters in Tame the Beast as Clara and Adam try—with quite a few stumbles—to navigate through both life and love.
How many hours per day do you spend writing?
Not as many hours as I wish! I do try for an hour to two hours a day, but it definitely varies weekly. I wish I could say writing is my full time job, but right now, it’s more part-time. I do hope to change that one day soon!
Name your top five favorite books.
This list could really go on and on, but in no particular order:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas (really, any of her stories)
A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
Withering Heights by Emily Bronte
Sentry by Robert Crais (or any of his Joe Pike novels)
What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m working on the rest of the Ever After series. I’m very excited about this series, as it will continue to follow a few of the characters that have already been introduced in Tame the Beast, but each tale will stand alone, and each has its own classic inspiration. The series will continue with The Country Rose, which follows Clara’s best friend and college roommate, Rose Laurence. Inspired by (but not a retelling of) many versions of Sleeping Beauty, The Country Rose will be a story about self-discovery, a scandalous past, and one sizzling summer fling! I’m also excited to announce that it will be coming late August, with a cover reveal at AllsionSmithBooks on July 1st!

When the family finances fall further in debt, her big college dreams are put on hold. Beaumont University has one thing to offer, a full ride, and Clara has no other choice but to accept. She’s the reliable daughter, the responsible one. But what she truly desires is adventure and passion, and she doesn’t expect to find either at the small town university. That is until she accidentally catches the alluring eye of the Adam Beaumont. He’s entitled, careless, and a shameless flirt. Clara knows a man of his beastly reputation is nothing but trouble … trouble wrapped in gorgeous, untamed trims.
But Adam has a tempting offer to make. One that will keep his mother off his back so he can continue his regularly scheduled life filled with big parties and beautiful women. It sounds like the perfect plan until a certain beauty proves to be a much bigger challenge than he ever expected. Worse, he can’t seem to get her off his mind.
Confident that she’s too smart to fall for his games, Clara accepts. But when two headstrong forces begin to clash, someone will have to fold or break all their rules.
Allison Smith lives in North Carolina with her wonderful husband and their spoiled mutt, Bubba. When she is not diving into a new story, Allison enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and day trips to downtown Raleigh. Her love of fairy tales inspired her first published novel, Tame the Beast, which was inspired by every version of Beauty and the Beast, but completely a tale all it’s own.
