The hardest part is marketing. It’s way out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know anything about social media before I started so I had to learn quickly. I’m still not very good at it and I can’t tell if I’m doing it right. There’s virtually no feedback.
Can you give us a short synopsis of Spell Breaker?
For a thousand years, the spell around Seaward Isle has kept the inhabitants imprisoned on the island, but Lady Alexin (Alex) uses her magical powers to break the spell and stop the storms, allowing the inhabitants to flee. The Elves lead them to Eledon, their homeland and offer sanctuary to all. However, the mortals long for a return to their world, so the Elves create a portal to get them there. Meanwhile, Alex, who is part Elf, choses to stay with her Elf family and takes on a mission to eliminate the most notorious criminal in Eledon, a Marsh Elf known as Sawgrass. As he plots to take over Eledon, she infiltrates his organization to destroy it, only to find her actions have significant consequences, forcing her to decide between her Elf family and her mortal one.
What inspired you to write this book?
This book continues Alex’s story which began in the first trilogy, “The Seaward Isle Saga.” By the end of that series, Alex has become an elite soldier and trained assassin, saving the island from tyranny. “Spell Breaker” begins the second series, “The Chronicles of Eledon.” Here, Alex attempts to find out who she is and where she belongs. She chooses to join the Elves, only to find that her training as a soldier conflicts with new social norms and leaves her confused.
How many hours a day do you spend writing?
I write something every day and the amount of time can vary. I average about 6 to 8 hours a day with a morning and afternoon session. In the evenings, I watch TV for a while, but if nothing’s on, I’m back on the computer. On weekends, I write in the mornings and skip afternoons unless there’s nothing else to do. If my muse is working, I’ve done 12 or more hours in a day.
Name your top 5 books.
“Lord of the Rings” (series) by JRR Tolkien
“Harry Potter and…” (series) by JK Rowling
“The Hunger Games” (series) by Suzanne Collins
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” (series) by Rick Riordan
“The Sixth Extinction” and anything else by James Rollins
What are you working on at the moment?
My current project is finishing up my next book called the “Blue Witch.” It’s book two in “The Chronicles of Eledon” series. The final draft is done and has been sent to my publisher who will format my book for publication. I’ve already picked out a cover. My book will be published in July 2016 in ebook form. A paperback form will be released a few months later. There are two more books in the pipeline for this series. The next is called “Gossamer” and the last one is “Noble Magic.”
