1. What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Sometimes the hardest part, believe it or not, is simply sitting down to write. My time to do that is sacred. It’s the only part of the day that I have to myself to just let go and live in another world. Given that, the second hardest part is plotting a book. If I sit down to write before I have at least a few chapters laid out in my mind, my time in front of the computer is wasted. Since, like plenty of other writers, I’m juggling family life, I need every minute of my writing time to be used wisely.
2. Can you give us a short synopsis of Rendered?
Sure thing. The year is 2099. All the oil is gone. So is the United States government as we know it. It’s been replaced by a faction called the Patriot Party, a group that maintains control of the people by imprisoning anyone who speaks out against them and by subjecting young women to the Rendering, a physical exam that you either pass or fail. Pass it and you’ll marry well, most likely to someone the party has picked out for you. Fail and you’ll be removed from all good society.
RENDERED follows Drian, a leader who’s failing miserably at controlling her band of rebels. Her people are on the verge of mutiny when Colvin, a rebel from a neighboring group, appears with a solution to her problem—all she has to do is trust him. That’s easier said than done. Drian has been burned by those she’s loved and trusted before and wants to avoid it happening again at all costs. But her attraction to Colvin is impossible to ignore. Can Drian give herself over to passion without getting attached?
3. What inspired you to write this book?
RENDERED is part of my Dark Revolution series, named such because the world is void of electricity. The inspiration for the series started with book one, UNLIKELY REBEL. It formed from the idea of a masquerade party. I wanted a man and woman to find each other at a ball, with one or both of them mistaking the other for someone else. I also wanted it to be a period piece. After some research, I decided the American Revolution was a great time to set it in. Though I did some research, I wasn’t completely comfortable writing a historical, so I decided to set the books in the future and allow the culture to be heavily influenced by that era.
4. How many hours per day do you spend writing?
Though I wish I could say all day, most of the time I fit in about a two hours. But in those two hours, I put down a lot of words. That’s why plotting and planning are so important to me. My time to write is limited, so I want to have the highest output possible. That’s the only way I can write more books!
5. Name your top five favourite books.
No pressure there. It’s hard to narrow to five, but here goes:
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – simply the perfect romance novel.
2. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis – one of my favorites as a child.
3. Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop – she perfects the wounded hero in this book.
4. A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux – a modern fairy tale. A great book I always tell friends about.
5. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson – a new favorite but well written and wonderful world building.
6. What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing book four of the Dark Revolution series. This book expands on the idea of the Rendering (which you’ll understand more about when you read RENDERED). It takes place at the Hold, a facility for women who fail the physical exam. It’s part workhouse/part hell. There, we meet Tess, a woman who has a secret the Patriot Party would kill for. She’s remained hidden from them for ten years but now the party knows where she is and will do anything to keep her quiet.
Author: Amy Boyles
Genre: Dystopian Romance
Ten years ago, Drian Becker underwent the Rendering, a humiliating body exam imposed upon the masses by her father, a commander in the Patriot Army. Being a high ranking official’s daughter, Drian thought she was safe from the practice—not so. Her father’s betrayal left her emotionally scarred and dishonored.
It’s now 2098. Drian hasn’t thought about the Rendering since she became leader of a rebel faction—mostly because she’s an expert at hiding her feelings behind a thick outer wall of badass attitude.
All that changes when Colvin Hinton walks into her camp. With his easy swagger and even easier demeanor, Colvin makes being a rebel look good enough to taste. But when Drian finds herself tangled in his charms she lets down her guard, giving an old enemy the chance to take her out once and for all.
If loving a man is this dangerous, would Drian have been better off remaining in the clutches of her father and living with the scars of being RENDERED?
