Finding time to write. I don't make a living off of my writing yet - hopefully someday - so with a full time job and other responsibilities of life, making time to write can be challenging. I often write on the bus during my commute to and from work, and try to set aside time in the evenings to write for even just a half hour or hour without interruption, but it isn't always possible. The longer I go without writing, the more I feel...incomplete.
Can you give us a short synopsis of Life as a Teenage Vampire?
If you take out the element of vampires, it's really a coming of age story in a small town of a young man discovering more about himself, what he wants, and being willing to accept that, which happens to include slowly growing feelings for his best friend, who as it turns out...has been in love with him for years. Add the vampires in again, and it bring together all the things I really love - fun banter, the paranormal, and relatable life experiences that I hope resonate with all of us on some level.
What inspired you to write this book?
Teen Wolf (the TV show) - particularly a fanfic I wrote for the fandom, This Time With Feeling, where Derek becomes a teenager again, was definitely the initial catalyst for this story, and fans of the show will recognize some of the early season one and two themes and relationship dynamics. Then Rainbow Boys (a book series, coming of age story about young gay teens), My Best Friend is a Vampire (the awesome 80s movie), a little bit of The Winter Soldier inspired some of the ideas behind one of the main character's prosthetic arms, and then just my own high school experiences, and those of friends of mine, so a lot of what happens in Life as a Teenage Vampire is based off the truth.
How many hours per day do you spend writing?
On a good day 2-3. I strive to at least write a little every day.
Name your top five favourtie books.
Memnoch the Devil
What are you working on now?
What I think might end up being my next trilogy, Lovesick Gods, though I started off thinking it would be a single book. It again is M/M romance, and is a superhero story where the hero and his nemesis become lovers, but all based on a nefarious plot by the hero that doesn't turn out at all as he expects. I'll be working on it especially heavily during NaNoWriMo this year.
